The customer opens the delivery bag and sees a clear container. Through the lid, they can see the colours of the salad — the greens, the cherry tomatoes, the quinoa, the dressing pooled at the bottom. Before they’ve taken a single bite, the packaging has already communicated something: this is fresh, this is premium, this kitchen cares about presentation.
This is the core commercial argument for PLA containers in cold food service. Transparency is a feature, not just a material property. For salads, grain bowls, chilled desserts, and cold beverages, the packaging is part of the product presentation — and PLA is the material that makes it possible.
But not all PLA is the same, and the wrong format or specification will fail under delivery conditions. What Is PLA and Why Does It Matter for Cold Food?
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic derived from plant starch — typically corn or sugarcane. It is produced by fermenting plant sugars into lactic acid, which is then polymerised into a plastic-like material. The result is a material that is:
- Transparent: Optically clear, allowing full visibility of the food inside
- Rigid: Structurally stable for stacking and delivery
- Compostable: Breaks down in industrial composting conditions (typically 60–90 days at 58°C+)
- Food-safe: Certified for direct food contact
- Petroleum-free: Unlike conventional clear plastics (PET, PP), PLA is not derived from fossil fuels
The critical limitation of PLA is its heat deflection temperature: standard PLA begins to soften and deform at approximately 55–60°C. This makes it entirely unsuitable for hot food but ideal for cold food, chilled items, and ambient-temperature foods that won’t be reheated in the container.

PLA vs. PET: Why PLA Wins for Food Service
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the conventional clear plastic used in most disposable food containers. It is also transparent, rigid, and food-safe. The functional difference between PLA and PET is environmental, not performance-based: PET is petroleum-derived and not compostable, while PLA is plant-derived and industrially compostable.
For food service businesses positioning themselves as sustainable, eco-conscious, or premium, PLA is the correct specification. For businesses where cost is the primary driver and sustainability positioning is not a factor, PET may be lower cost per unit. The per-unit cost difference between PLA and PET narrows significantly at volumes above 1,000 units — the MOQ at which custom branding becomes viable.
PLA Container Formats: Choosing the Right Shape for Your Menu

PLA containers are available in several formats, each suited to different menu items and service contexts.
Round Bowls with Separate Lids
The most common format for grain bowls, salads, and chilled desserts. The round bowl with a snap-on or press-fit lid is the standard for delivery and takeaway cold food service.
- Sizes: 350 ml (side salad / small bowl), 500 ml (standard single-serve bowl), 750 ml (large bowl / sharing), 1,000 ml (family / bulk)
- Best for: Grain bowls, salads, acai bowls, fruit bowls, chilled desserts
- Lid types: Flat lid (stackable, lower profile), dome lid (accommodates taller ingredients like leafy greens or garnishes)
- Stacking: Round bowls stack efficiently, reducing storage footprint
Rectangular Trays with Lids
Rectangular trays offer more surface area per volume than round bowls, making them better suited for items where presentation across a flat surface matters — composed salads, charcuterie-style arrangements, sushi, or multi-component meals.
- Sizes: 500 ml, 750 ml, 1,000 ml, 1,500 ml
- Best for: Composed salads, sushi, wraps cut in half, multi-component cold meals
- Lid types: Flat snap-on lids standard; some formats available with hinged lids
- Note: Rectangular trays do not stack as efficiently as round bowls and require more shelf space per unit
Hinged Clamshell Containers
Clamshell containers have the lid and base connected by a hinge, eliminating the need for a separate lid. They are faster to use at the dispatch station (one piece, not two) and provide a secure seal without requiring a separate snap-on lid.
- Sizes: 500 ml, 750 ml, 1,000 ml
- Best for: Sandwiches, wraps, burgers (cold), salads where speed of packing is a priority
- Advantage: Single-piece construction reduces assembly time and eliminates lid-base mismatch errors
- Limitation: Hinge can be a weak point under heavy loads; not ideal for very heavy or liquid-heavy items
Portion Cups with Lids
Small PLA cups (60 ml, 120 ml, 200 ml) with snap-on lids are used for dressings, dips, sauces, and small dessert portions. These are the cold-food equivalent of PP sauce cups.

Lid Selection: Flat vs. Dome
The lid choice is more consequential than it appears. The wrong lid type causes two specific problems: food compression (flat lid pressing down on tall ingredients) and condensation pooling (dome lid trapping moisture that drips onto the food when opened).
Flat Lids
Flat lids sit flush with the top of the container. They are the correct choice for:
- Dense, compact foods that fill the container without protruding above the rim (grain bowls, rice-based dishes, dense salads)
- Stacking — flat-lidded containers stack more stably than dome-lidded ones
- Minimising condensation pooling — the flat surface allows condensation to run to the edges rather than pooling centrally
Dome Lids
Dome lids provide additional headspace above the container rim. They are the correct choice for:
- Leafy salads where greens extend above the container rim
- Garnished dishes where height is part of the presentation
- Acai bowls and smoothie bowls with toppings
The trade-off: dome lids trap more air, which increases condensation. For delivery contexts where the container will be in a bag for 20–40 minutes, condensation management matters. If your salad has a dressing already applied, condensation from a dome lid can dilute the dressing and make the greens soggy. Consider sending dressing separately in a portion cup for delivery orders.
Branding PLA Containers

PLA containers present a specific branding challenge: the material is transparent, which means traditional printing directly on the container surface is not standard. The two practical branding approaches for PLA are sticker branding and custom-printed lids.
Sticker Branding (Most Common)
A branded sticker applied to the lid is the most common and most cost-effective branding approach for PLA containers. The sticker serves as both the brand identifier and the tamper seal.
Sticker specifications for PLA lids:
- Material: BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) or vinyl — both adhere well to PLA surfaces
- Size: Sized to cover the majority of the lid surface for maximum brand visibility
- Adhesive: Permanent adhesive for tamper-evidence; the sticker should not be removable without visible damage
- Finish: Matte finish reduces glare and photographs better than gloss for social media content
- Minimum order: Custom stickers are typically available from 500–1,000 units at low cost per unit
Custom-Printed Lids
For higher-volume operations, custom-printed lids (with your logo and brand colours printed directly on the lid material) are available from specialist packaging manufacturers. This requires higher MOQs (typically 5,000+ units per design) but produces a more premium result than sticker branding.
Temperature and Storage Limits
PLA has specific temperature constraints that must be understood before specifying it for your operation:
- Maximum food temperature: 45°C. Do not use PLA containers for food above this temperature. At 55–60°C, PLA begins to deform.
- Minimum food temperature: No lower limit — PLA performs well at refrigeration temperatures (2–8°C) and freezer temperatures.
- Storage temperature: Store PLA containers below 40°C. In Indian summers, storerooms without air conditioning can exceed this threshold. PLA containers stored in hot conditions may warp before use.
- Microwave: PLA is NOT microwave-safe. Clearly communicate this to customers — a sticker or printed note on the container is advisable.
- Dishwasher: PLA is NOT dishwasher-safe. Hot water and detergent will deform PLA containers.
Compostability: What It Actually Means
PLA is industrially compostable, not home compostable. This distinction matters for how you communicate your sustainability credentials to customers.
Industrial composting requires sustained temperatures of 55–60°C for 60–90 days — conditions that exist in commercial composting facilities but not in a home compost bin or landfill. In a landfill, PLA degrades at a similar rate to conventional plastic. In a home compost bin, PLA will not break down within a reasonable timeframe.
The correct claim: “This container is made from plant-based PLA and is industrially compostable.” Do not claim “biodegradable” without qualification — this is misleading and may violate advertising standards.

PLA in Monsoon Conditions
PLA performs well in cold and humid conditions — it does not absorb moisture or soften in high humidity the way kraft paper does. This makes PLA containers more resilient than kraft boxes during monsoon months for cold food applications.
However, the lids of PLA containers can become slippery when wet, and the sticker adhesive may be compromised by prolonged exposure to moisture.
